The International Space Station (ISS) is a modular human space station in Low Earth orbit. It is a collaboration between five participating international space agencies: NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA, and CSA. The space station is governed by an agreement and ownership, which were signed by the governments of its various countries. Although there are some differences in the way these international space stations operate within their individual domains, there are similarities as well. The space station was put into orbit by the Space Shuttle in manned orbit during the days of ST astronauts.
Interesting International Space Station Facts
The ISS is not only for research and scientific purposes; it is also used for providing constant crew training to the astronauts of different nationalities. The major activities which take place on the ISS are science experiments, observation and tracking programs, maintenance and repair of the station’s equipment and supplies, provision of living quarters and a research and experiment facility. There is also a visitor center, whereby reporters and photographers can get information from the astronauts. The ISS is one of the largest structures in the solar system, weighing more than ten thousand kilograms and having a surface area of nearly twenty-three thousand square meters.
This international facility is located approximately six hundred kilometers from the Chinese controlled astronauts who call this module the Tiangong-1. It was supposed to be the first Chinese-controlled space laboratory, but later it was discovered that there were already several Chinese labs orbiting the Earth. The construction of this laboratory was begun at the request of the Chinese government in collaboration with NASA and the European Space Agency. The lab was put into operation in November 2021.
Reasons To Build A Lab
One of the main reasons why the Chinese built this lab was to monitor the progress of their astronauts in learning how to operate in orbit and in using the international space Station. Some interesting experiments were carried out, such as the first-ever bioluminescent experiment in space which uses bacteria. Several experiments have been carried out using this facility, like testing the effects of zero gravity on plant growth. A lot has been learned by the Chinese and Europeans in the use of these laboratories; they have successfully conducted experiments to study the effects of space radiation on plants and also studying the microorganisms living in space.
There is also a module called the Habitable Space Research Station (HSR). This is another unique structure. It was made by Jordon Venterich in cooperation with NASA. This is the only fully operational modular structure ever built. It was mainly designed to test living conditions of different environments under various conditions. Some experiments carried out in this module have been successful and shown great promise in helping us better understand how we could live in space.
ISS Is An Expensive Affair
Another important fact about the ISS is that it is an expensive affair. The construction of the station cost NASA several billions of dollars. China is looking forward to the possibility of using the ISS as a stepping stone for their own missions to the Moon and Mars. One interesting experiment that was carried out recently is the use of a potato and a piece of cardboard as a habitat. It is hoped that by using similar materials that experiments can be carried out easily and cheaply.
There are also many space station facts and information that will delight children. For example, there is no way that they would get seasick. If they come to land on the Red Planet, they would not be able to speak English well. The astronauts themselves have taken care of that issue by using recordings of beautiful children’s songs. They play those sounds back on the International Space Station so that the astronauts will not hear anything that might make them seasick.
In addition, there are two living organisms that occupy the International Space Station at the present time. These are the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) and the Robotic android. There are a number of experiments going on all round the clock. They are testing the effects of zero gravity on these two different living beings. It is also testing the effects of radiation on these two fine organisms.
