The Name

This planet has a Roman name. It was named after the Roman God of War. It is also called as the Red Planet. The reason for this is that it appears red in colour. The colour is due to iron oxide which is there in the rock and soil of this planet.

Size Comparison With Earth

Mercury is the smallest planet of our solar system. After mercury comes Mars. If you were to compare the size of this planet with earth you will realise that it is half the size of the earth. This planet has a diameter of 6,791 kms.

It Can Get Really Cold On This Planet

This red planet is far away from the sun as compared to the earth. So naturally, it is much colder than earth. At the equator, the temperature can be 20degrees Celsius. But at the poles, the temperature can go down to -140 degrees Celsius.

However, this perception changed in the year 2018. Now there are evidences that there is a lake on this planet. It is located on the planet’s south polar ice cap.

Human beings have not gone to this planet. However, scientists have sent spacecrafts to this planet in the past. This was mainly to study the details about this planet. In the year 1976, the first spacecraft landed on this planet. The name of this space craft was Viking Landers.
