What is Astrophysics?
Astrophysics is the branch of physics that studies celestial objects such as stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, and other matter outside Earth’s atmosphere and how they interact with each other in space. From astrophysicists, we have discovered many facts about outer space including what a comet is, why stars emit light and heat, how long it takes for a planet to orbit its sun. Anything beyond Earth’s atmosphere falls under the category of astrophysics which includes studying events from both microcosm (particles smaller than atoms) or macrocosm (larger than planets).
Astrophysics, which can also be defined as the science that deals with celestial objects are sometimes referred to as astrophysics or simply astronomy. Some scientists are both astronomers and astrophysicists depending on their area of expertise which includes black holes, planets, solar systems, galaxies, or nebulae.
Types of Astrophysicists
There are different types of astrophysicists including theoretical astrophysicists who research topics such as dark matter and string theory, observational astrophysicists who collect data from space objects via telescopes and satellites, planetary scientists who study planets within the Solar System (ex- NASA’s Mars Rover), galactic astronomers whose job it is to map distant galaxies via space telescope technology – ex: Hubble Telescope, and cosmologists who study the origin of the universe (ex: Big Bang Theory).

Astrophysics has a lot to do with our everyday lives. For example, when you turn on a light switch, you’re relying on principles of astrophysics. The electricity that flows through your light bulb is created by nuclear fusion reactions that take place in stars. When you drive your car, you’re using technology that was developed based on knowledge of astrophysics. Even something as simple as a cell phone relies on the principles of astrophysics!
So, next time you think about turning on the TV or taking a trip in your car, think about how astrophysics plays an important role in making these things possible.
How to Become an Astrophysicist
Astrophysicists are scientists who study astrophysics, which is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of celestial objects. They study how they form, evolve, and eventually die. Astrophysicists can work in many different areas including observatories, universities, research centres, and many different companies.
What do they do?
People with astrophysics degrees can work in several different fields. Some people will work as an assistant, such as telescopes and observatories that collect information for scientists; others will be researchers; some will look to advance their education by getting a graduate degree, and still, others may become teachers, either at the high school or college level.
